AFRICAN DANCE WORKSHOPS
Discover Africa through dance. These dance workshops are a powerful storytelling tool through dance, making reference to African culture through movement. These energetic and extremely fun workshops will get the blood pumping and the smiles showing. Students will learn a set number of traditional movements, leading up to a full choreographed group piece. Combine with live drumming workshops and an incredibly exiting atmosphere is created and echoes a true African cultural experience.
BRAZILIAN DANCE WORKSHOPS
An incredibly exciting workshop in Afro-Brazilian dance, exploring this wonderfully colourful and rich nation, heavily influenced by African culture. Suitable for any aged student, we can adapt all of our school workshops, whatever age. Our extremely knowledgeable teachers give an insight into the social and historical street cultures of Brazil and take each student on an exciting journey through Brazil with movement and dance.
INDIAN DANCE WORKSHOPS
Students will learn how to tell stories through their bodies in this high-energy workshop. Exploring folkloric tales of this incredible country, Indian dance is the epitome of expression. Our dance leaders work across the UK at many cultural events and have a wealth of experience delivering in educational settings. Indian dance is high impact and is great for mobility, health, fitness…and it’s extremely fun. Students will work on individual movements, leading up to full group choreography.
CUBAN DANCE WORKSHOPS
Combining ancient African influenced Orisha traditions (Afro Cuban deities) this workshop is part dance, part theatre, as students will embody the characteristics of deities from this rich tradition. From solo work, working on each deity, to full group chorography, this workshop is an amazing insight into these beautiful traditions. Students will be asked to try new things and work towards directing some of the workshops themselves.
CAPOEIRA WORKSHOPS
The famous acrobatic art form dating back to times of slavery in the 16th Century, where African slaves masked their ancient traditions in a none-contact dance. Students will be wowed by our workshop leaders in a full demonstration, then will have a go themselves. This tradition is a global phenomenon and may lead to young people taking up this beautiful art form outside of school.
A COMBINATION OF CULTURES
Many of our dance tutors have experience over a number of global styles so we can deliver workshops in different styles over your time with Drum Jam. We can cater for any bespoke themes or multiple cultural celebrations your school might wish to explore, perfect for a celebration or arts day.
HOW IT WORKS
To offer the best experience we tend to need the day in your school although shorter and longer sessions are easy to accommodate. If you wish you can add music, visual arts, (head-dresses, puppets, costumes), Capoeira, Circus Skills, and each requires an additional artist
How many children can we work with?
Each artist works with a maximum of thirty at any one time. Parallel sessions are normal, so that for two artists 60 children are in a workshop at one time.
How long are the sessions?
Sessions last from one hour to a morning/afternoon depending on how many children you want to involve, your school timetable and spaces available.
What equipment does Drum Jam provide?
We provide all necessary equipment. For dance, we will need something to play music through.
What does the school need to provide?
We usually need a main hall for a demonstration by our artistic team at the start of the day and at the end of the event if you wish the children to share a brief presentation.
We need a suitable space for dance.
Anything else?
We offer a number of exciting packages and music services in schools and we offer a free bespoke planning service.
